The Family

This is one of the only pitchfork features i read regularly: Today he goes to watch hannah montana. Here's an exerpt from mid-column:


"I wanted to be open-minded, promise, despite believing The Suite Life of Zack & Cody to be the nadir of television, and despite having confused the High School Musicals (due to their generic titles) with those bad spoofs, e.g. Scary/Date/Epic Movie. I wanted to not condescendingly write off tween-pop superfans as, you know, duped zombies in thrall to a media-acculturation machine with plans to keep them on a womb-to-tomb consumer treadmill. But I've attended "kids marketing conferences" and received pamphlets in which Nickelodeon (not to be confused with Disney, but, yeah, still) reminds an industry audience that its product isn't shows or toys, but children, which it delivers to its true customers: advertisers. I've watched a suit from another well-known company point giddily to a pie chart conveying the beneficial impact-- grouped by race and income level-- that broken homes have on fast food consumption.
